Users of frient use the smart devices for many, many purposes and cool automations in their homes.
But the frients can also help out in professional settings – such as helping to ensure the temperature of flu shots are at a safe level in a medical clinic!
The challenge of keeping a steady temperature
Keeping the right temperature when storing flu vaccines is key – otherwise, the vaccines go bad and must be thrown out.
In fact, the vaccines must be stored at temperatures between 2°C and 8°C at all times. If the temperature drops below or exceeds this, the vaccines are no longer usable.
At Medisch Centrum Dichteren in the Netherlands, the staff used to manually check the storage fridge’s temperature once a day to make sure the temperature was within the limits.
But if the temperature had fluctuated between checks, the staff had no way of knowing that the vaccines had actually gone bad.
Automating temperature tracking with Homey and frient
Because of this vaccine safety and compliance risk, the medical clinic needed a smarter way of controlling the temperature continuously.
So, the clinic turned to the smart home automation experts at Homey who set up a Homey Pro hub and a few friently helpers.
To ensure real-time temperature tracking, Homey installed a frient Smart Humidity Sensor inside the fridge.
The humidity sensor not only tracks the temperature in the fridge but can also send instant alerts in case of temperature fluctuations to the staff’s phones via the hub. Data from this frient also enabled Homey to log temperature fluctuations for internal records.
Preventing open fridge doors
Another storage risk at the clinic was staff members leaving the fridge door open for too long, warming up the vaccines.
To solve this issue, a frient Entry Sensor Pro was installed on the fridge door to track whether the door was open or closed. This way, an alert could be sent to staff phones and trigger a speaker alert if the door was open for too long, allowing the staff to act quickly.
By using the intelligence of Homey and the accurate data capture of the Smart Humidity Sensor and Entry Sensor Pro, the clinic could now better control the temperature of their flu vaccines, ensuring safe storage, less waste, and more peace of mind.
