Is your piano suffering?
If you have a piano among your valued possessions, you probably want to protect it and extend its lifespan as much as possible. You’ve most likely found just the right spot at home for your piano, but did you ever consider the level of humidity that your piano is exposed to? Pianos are extremely humidity sensitive, making it crucial to keep the humidity level surrounding the piano at the ideal 40-50%.
Too humid or too dry?
A high humidity level is a problem, but a very dry environment is even worse. Heating and cooling systems are among the sinners of increasing dryness in a room. When the air is too dry, the wooden components of the piano will shrink. In severe cases, sections that are glued together in the piano may come apart. The piano then becomes difficult to keep in tune.
The friently humidity spy
Need a helping hand in monitoring the level of humidity that your piano is exposed to? The Smart Humidity Sensor from frient is a wireless sensor that monitors the level of humidity in a room and sends the data to your connected hub. This way, you can easily keep track of whether or not the conditions are optimal for your piano.
The friently sensor actually also monitors the temperature of the room. Similar to low or high levels of humidity, changes in the room temperature can be very damaging to your piano. When the room temperature suddenly changes from cold to warm, moisture will condense on the metal parts of the piano, e.g. the piano strings, and will cause them to rust.
